Gastroenterologist

Dr Michael De Gregorio is a Melbourne trained Gastroenterologist. He combines private practice with a public senior medical specialist appointment at St Vincent’s Hospital.

Michael completed his medical degree at the University of Melbourne and was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in gastroenterology, after completing training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Michael went on to establish himself as a clinician researcher, by undertaking a fellowship in inflammatory bowel disease at St Vincent’s Hospital and a Doctor of Philosophy through the University of Melbourne.

Michael values holistic and patient-centred care. Through his compassionate and empathetic manner, he collaboratively works with patients and other health professionals to investigate and treat all areas of gastrointestinal concerns, including inflammatory bowel disease, bowel cancer screening, reflux disease, coeliac disease, liver disease, and functional gut disorders (irritable bowel syndrome).

Michael is an experienced endoscopist in gastroscopy and colonoscopy and certified with the Gastroenterology Society of Australia. He offers these services at multiple endoscopy centres and hospitals, where open access endoscopy is also available. Michael is also experienced in intestinal ultrasound, which he performs as part of his appointment in the public sector.

As a clinician researcher, Michael maintains an active role in clinical trials, with a particular interest in complex fistulising Crohn’s disease and optimising advanced therapies. He has presented and published multiple research projects and continues to engage on national and international platforms, where he strongly advocates for the improved delivery of individualised patient care.
